Oleg Makarov Shares His Outlook On Legal Profession Regulation and Legal Business Development During the 6th Legal Forum in Moscow

On April 8-9, 2010, Moscow, Russia, hosted the 6th annual conference “Legal Forum” organized by “Vedomosti” newspaper.

Since 2004, annually the legal forum has been bringing together partners from top law firms, heads of legal departments and lawyers from Russian and foreign companies, as well as authority representatives and judges in Moscow.

Similar to previous years, Oleg Makarov, Managing Partner with Vasil & Kisil Law Firm, was invited to take part in the conference. Mr. Makarov delivered his speech within the first session entitled: “Outlook for Legal Profession Regulation and Legal Business Development”, which covered trends as to changes in bar laws of the Russian Federation and Ukraine. His report highlighted such key issues as advocacy procedure and timeliness of advocacy monopoly. Being a recognized expert in the above area, Mr. Makarov represented his vision of a forthcoming way to regulate the profession via the fusion of professions of practicing lawyers and legal counsels at law firms. Finally, Oleg Makarov emphasized the need to approve cross-lawyer professional ethical standards.

Traditionally, the Forum’s key topics included, inter alia, legal business development, law firm management and the profession reformation. The event participants paid their particular attention to the evolvement of tax and corporate law, customs and banking laws, business antitrust regulation and litigation. They discussed, as well, legal problems promoting or, vice versa, preventing business development, which actions they would like to see on the side of the legal community and authorities to ensure comfortable conditions for business. Urgent topics of regulating partnership relations at a law firm ignited active discussions among attendees.
